Fire Destroys Louis Dahl Farm House

Fire of undetermined origin completely destoryed the farm house on the Louis Dahl farm, located southwest of Glenwood City shortly after noon Monday.  City firemen were forced to abandon their attempts to extinguish the blaze because of a lack of water. When the water supply in the cistern reached a low level, it was decided to save what remained to check any spread of the fire to other buildings in case of a shift ini the wind.

Mr. and Mrs. Dahl and three children, Wayne 15, Carol 12, and Roger 4, were at home when the blaze started. Mrs. Dahl and the two younger children were in the house at the time while Mr. Dahl and Wayne were working in the barn.

Mrs. Dahl noticed smoke in the house and called her husband. By the time he reached the house flames had spread throughout the two-story frame building. Mr. Dahl suffered burns on his face and right arm in an attempt to remove some of the household goods from the house. He was brought to Glenwood City for treatment.

Nothing was saved in the fire except the clothing which members of the family were wearing when the blaze was discovered.

Mr. Dahl was unable to get to the telephone to turn in an alarm. The alarm came to the city when neighbors noticed the fire. Although the truck and firemen reached the blaze within 15 minutes after the alarm, the house was completely ablaze at that time.

Pumping water from the cistern, firemen were able to check the flames considerably and might have been able to put out the blaze if enough water had been available. Part of the seven room house was built of logs over 50 years ago, and the other part was a section of a house moved some years ago from Glenwood City.  The flames were checked from breaking through to the outside for a long time by insulation material between the studdings.

Firemen fought the blaze in zero weather, but fortunately there was no strong wind at the time.

There is another house on the Dahl farm, owned by Miss Anna Dahl of Minneapolis, a sister of Louis.

A group of friends and neighbors have planned an open house miscellaneous shower for the Dahl family, to be held Friday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sam Teigen home in Glenwood City.
